Originals, in the age of digital, might not be valued over their copies. Qualitative loss or distortion followed by a copying process in the age of analogue has served as the foundation for the superiority of the originals over the copies. However such hierarchy has been questioned since the emergence of the digital technology which is capable of replicating identical copies. Apparently some digital materials that are native to the digital condition replicate themselves endlessly without loss of data. It brings up the possibility of numerous originals for a copy or the possibility of copies without an original.
These possibilities are not unprecedented. Commodities of quality controlled mass production or films deconstructing the concept of originality that Walter Benjamin argued about in The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction might be prototypes of the possibilities. However, the aura of the originals of the digital technology today (or the copy’right’ in a sense) can only be secured by systematic regulations (serial numbers, for example). At least within the digital realm, infinite replication of an original without loss of data is possible (given that unlimited space in a hardware is provided). Even though this new relation between the copy and the original seems to be derived from the desire that devised mass production and analogue copying, it is headed to a different destination from its analogue counterparts as the relation has no original to yearn for.
Obviously we are living in the world of analogue where physical and chemical logics are still valid, and the controversial and revolutionary digital realm, in which the distinction between the original and the copies has been disappearing, is after all part of our analogue world. (It is easy to escape a digital world that you don’t desire anymore: destroy the hard disk.) Is it because the digital world is but a dream projected on our analogue world? But what about all the videos, images, sounds prevailing the digital realm? They already permeated into our realm of analogue and are deployed in the reality as substantials, which are more real than the actual real.
Data, which are not capable of being reduced, are like phantoms of the equivalent system generated by language (or other signification systems). The phantoms are weaved by a language, binary code, to wander this analog world. They are represented to be more real than the real itself after all.
It is this language that stands behind all these. (In a bigger context of sign) family photos that bring nostalgia or pornographic footages with euphoric hymns are all but variations of binary codes. The only difference is that the codes are never reduced within its own system. Language aims to be an equivalent system inherently. And except for the loss of dimension in the initial process of abstracting a thing into a language, language itself cannot be reduced but breed to justify it self. Despite of the initial loss, the phenomenon of digital can be seen as a linguistic (or semiology) fixation of reality in which the oversupply of desires grow gigantic. Representation through a binary code as langue without parole seems credible because they are considered to be objective. This machine language as the governing medium of the era is so transparent that it hides itself time to time. And this transparency is a privilege given to the religion and the view of the world that are most definite and prevalent in the era.
Competition in the premium audio market to represent sounds that are more real than the original seems outdated, since the technology has already achieved its goal in the mid 20th century. The market of retinal display and the technological competition within the market, in order to overcome the capability of vision of the human retina, might be the most up to date endeavour. The more pixels provided, the more invisible the system become from the reality. 3D printing technology will soon introduce livers and kidneys that are printed from data, without originals. These attempts to extract the real from the phantom reinforce the simulation: simulation of perceivable signs costume-extracted to fit into the valid range of human perception. The original loses its usefulness(or aura) over the course, and the extracted sign is reassembled in accordance with its utility. If one day electronic retinas are transplanted into human organisms we could reserve ourselves from carrying around 120 inch UHD television. After all, all the problem lie on the phantom: the phantom of sign and its representation.
It might sound foolish, but in a near future, we might witness the world where systematic regulation is the only demarcation between an original biological organism and its copy. The world as such may have been redundantly illustrated by science fictions for many decades, but it is important to remind ourselves that we are already living in the world of copies without their originals.

(The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction)
